How can I increase my LAN speed on my Acer Aspire laptop?

My father has a Dell Inspiron with an 802.11b/g/n card 1.33GHz 3Mb cache. I have an Acer Aspire with an an 802.11b/g/n card 2.0GHz 3Mb cache. On his FiOs hardwire, he can hit speeds of 45/25. On his wireless, he can hit 16/8. I log into his network, and my max numbers are 25/6 wired and 8/2 wireless. Why is there a discrepancy, and how can it be fixed?
